We-Vibe Nova

I get confused about a lot of things. Like how to use an STP without peeing on my own legs, why the zippers are on the back of Star Trek TNG uniforms, why glitter cheers me up so much, and a lot more. But I didn’t think I was confused about what kinds of stimulation I liked until I started using the We-Vibe Nova. Every time I use this toy, I end up very befuddled as to how I came. With it, I’m never able to climax the same way twice. I don’t think I’m a rabbit-style person but, if you are, this toy is pretty astronomical.

HOW THIS TOY WORKS
The We-Vibe Nova is a silicone coated, pink & white “rabbit style” toy1Rabbit style toys are dual stim that feature a (usually larger) internal portion with a handle, as well as an external arm, both of which offer vibration/some sort of stimulation. Not all dual stim toys are rabbits, ie the We-Vibe Sync. that measures about 9” long from tip to tail. 5” of that length is an insertable section and it’s about 1.35” wide at the widest point. The external arm is about 5” long and 1” wide, made of a flexible silicone. It charges magnetically with two nubs on the neck of the handle.

Turn the toy on by pressing the middle button. It starts at whatever setting it was last on. Hitting the middle button will cycle through first external vibration, then internal, then both motors. On any of these settings, you can click the plus or minus buttons to control the power level of the toy’s vibrations. In this way, you can choose if you’d like the internal arm at full power, and the external arm at a lower setting, simultaneously.2by getting to the internal only setting and clicking plus until it gets to the highest setting, then clicking the middle button to the external setting and adjusting the power to a lower setting, finally clicking the middle button to get back to the setting with both motors Clicking the side buttons (< and >) will rotate through Nova’s nine patterns. You can have each motor on a different power setting, or you can use either one (or both) on a pattern, but you can’t have both arms on different patterns. To turn the Nova off, hold down the center button. For more on manual use, charging, etc. check out the Nova user guide.

This toy has app compatibility with the We-Connect app (like other We-Vibe products) . Unlike other app controlled toys, We-Connect is really easy to set up & use. It starts in your basic internal+external vibration screen. Clicking the three bars in the top brings you to the panel that allows you to pair your phone with any of We-Vibe’s compatible toys (Sync, Wish, Rave, & Nova) via bluetooth. This is super easy too! As long as your bluetooth is on, you click ‘pair We-Vibe’ then click it again when you’re brought to the connection screen. At that point, you hold down the power button on your toy until there are two buzzes from the toy. Three buzzes lets you know it’s connected, as does a cute welcome screen, and then you’re taken to the vibration controls.

For We-Vibe’s dual stim toys (Sync and Nova, at the time of writing), the top waves are for the external motor, with the bottom waves for the internal. The toy starts ‘paused’ and you can adjust the power or hit play whenever you want. Dragging up or down on the waves increases or decreases power. Alternatively, you can push the plus or minus buttons on the bottom of the screen. To get to the patterns, you have three options. Swipe left or right, click the down carrot by the name of the pattern and select any of the pre-programmed apps, or create your own & save that. You can also create your own ‘vibe’ from the control panel.

Besides being a remote control for solo use (ideal for folks who would have difficulty  navigating the buttons on this toy), We-Connect allows you to ‘Connect Lover.’3I appreciate that the term is gender neutral, even though “partner” would have worked just fine. The app allows you to send a link via any messaging apps on your phone for your partner to download the app & control your vibe. Once your partner is ready, the app tells you “Your Lover Wants To Connect!” and gives you the option for ‘Yes!’ and ‘Maybe Later’. Controls work the same for your partner as they would if you were in control. There are functions for chat, video, and audio. All work while you/your partner are controlling the toy. If you ever want your partner to stop controlling the vibrations, clicking ‘take control’ gives power back to you. If your partner clicks control, it asks if you’d like to give them that power. You can totally control your toy on your own and use the app for that & video/text chat. Chats are deleted after you close the app.

The top of the control panel shows how much charge your toy has, which is my favorite feature of the app, and there are additional options to switch devices, rewatch the intro video, and adjust the settings. In ‘Settings,’ you can set a PIN to ‘enable the discretion lock,’ as well as set how long you want your toy to vibrate without adjustment before it times out.

HOW I USE THIS TOY
I think part of my “issue” with this toy is how close my clit is to my vaginal opening. I didn’t think about it until I was using the Nova though, in retrospect, it makes a lot of sense. I love stimulation right at the entrance to my vagina (since it’s so close to my clit) and the easiest way for me to get off during penetrative sex is to be on top of my partner and grind on them/their pubic bone. The Nova was intentionally designed to fit more & different types of bodies. The flexibility of the external arm means that you can curve it around in order to stimulate wherever your clit (or other pleasure-point) may be. Because my clit is so close to my vaginal opening, the arm doesn’t actually curve on its own and I have to force it to curve farther than it otherwise would against my body.

When the external arm finally comes into contact with my clit, the vibrations are so intense that it can be painful. I have to immediately power it down pretty low and slowly raise it from there until I get used to it. The lower powers don’t do much for me, but the higher powers are either “OW that’s painful” or “is that it?” On the other hand, I love the internal arm of the Nova. I wish that was a toy on its own. It feels like a skinnier version of the Lelo Mona, where the curve pulls against my g-spot, so rocking the toy back and forth is my favorite thing about the Nova. I wish that were more powerful, but that’s a minor thing.

The first time I used the Nova in earnest, I paired it with the app. To be honest, I was confused by the buttons. Being able to make minute changes to power levels or IMMEDIATELY drop the external arm’s power was really nice. I did find myself wishing the power levels would go higher once I got used to them, but I think they would work just fine if I better paced myself. As it is, I get off every time I use this toy. I did notice some occasions where there was a few-seconds delay between me changing a setting in the app and the toy actually changing power, but that hasn’t been the case during all the other times I’ve messed around with the app. I’m going to fault the bluetooth connecting through my body and a thick comforter.

The next two times, I used the toy manually. I wanted to actually understand the buttons and  my phone was charging since bluetooth eats my battery. I found that, while I didn’t have as much exact control, I didn’t mind because I don’t really give a shit about patterns. I’d rather rock a toy on constant power back and forth manually. However, if you want to get REALLY specific with this toy, it’s a lot faster to do so with the app. For example, if your ideal setting is full power internal arm, half power external arm, that’s like 2-3 clicks away on the app. To do so manually would require rotating to each arm & changing the settings there and then changing to the dual-motor setting.

The We-Vibe Nova goes for $149 in a variety of places. If you love dual stim, it’s the most likely toy to fit your anatomy. It’s also not a bad toy at all, really nicely rumbly & powerful. Purchase the We-Vibe Nova from Early to Bed, Lovehoney. Come As You Are, SheVibe, Peepshow Toys, Vibrant. Unbound, or directly from We-Vibe. On the other hand, if you’re not sure if you like dual stim, or want the option to have one or the other, I recommend the We-Vibe Rave (which features the same app as the Nova) paired with something external (like the We-Vibe Tango) only when you want it.

LUBE & CLEANING
This toy is covered completely in silicone, which can bond with silicone based lube. I recommend a water based lube so you don’t run the risk of ruining your toy.

The We-Vibe Nova charges magnetically and is submergible, so it can be fully submerged for cleaning with soap and water. If you like more intense cleaning, you can drop it into a 10% bleach solution, then rinse it thoroughly with water.

PROs:

  • Rumbly
  • Fits more bodies than other rabbit style vibes
  • Really good, gender-neutral app

CONs:

  • Settings can be confusing
  • Power ranges don’t vary enough
  • Best for dual stim, not great for anything else
